It was hard to miss the best soccer player on the field Wednesday at Valley Stream Memorial Junior High — No. 11 in the blue uniform, aka Joeyce Forero.
But that wasn’t anything new in the eyes of Valley Stream Central High coach Steve Sharkey.
“Going into every single game, I feel personally that we have the best player on the field in any of our conference games,” Sharkey said. “… It’s a clear advantage.”
It was crystal clear in this 6-1 Nassau AAA/AA-III win over Uniondale.
Forero was everywhere in the picture, delivering a career-high-tying four goals and one assist as a center midfielder and filling in defensively at sweeper in the second half.
“I think she’s the biggest difference between the two teams,” Uniondale coach Kevin Daly said. “Very physical, good first touch. She can strike a ball. She knows where the goal is. We couldn’t cope with her.”
This is the junior’s fourth varsity season, her third as a starter. She’s up to 12 goals and six assists, and her career totals are up to 51 goals and 31 assists.
She knows her leadership counts toward winning, too.
“I think being captain, my morale, it goes with the team as well,” Forero said. “If my morale is down, the team’s morale is down. So I’ve got to be that player, step up, tell the players where to go, stuff like that.”
Forero sent a corner kick into the box that Jailyn Fajardo corralled and put in for the first of her two goals, giving the Eagles a 1-0 edge with 25:16 left in the first half.
A little more than two minutes later, Forero converted a penalty kick.
Then Isabella Contreras assisted on Forero’s next two goals — 4-0 at the half.
In the second half, Forero sailed a gorgeous free kick into the net from about 30 yards out on the left side, making it 5-0.
“Sharkey’s a great coach,” said Forero, who hopes to play collegiately. “I think overall we’re just a great team.”
VSC moved to 5-1-2.
“My hopes are that it still works out and there is a potential for us as outsiders to sneak in,” Sharkey said, referencing the Nassau AA playoffs.
Kendra Gordon scored for the 3-4-1 Knights, a team with some promising young talent.
“It’s a rebuilding year,” Daly said. “It’s an experimenting year. We’re putting girls in different positions. So it’s a learning process.”
