BACKGROUND

  • Butts, 55, of Long Beach, is a registered Democrat and is running on the Democratic Party line in the general election. This is her first bid for public office.
  • She was born and raised in Long Beach and graduated from the city’s public schools. She is a licensed radiologic and mammography technologist and a certified CT scan technologist.
  • Butts worked at Long Beach Medical Center until it closed in 2012 after it was damaged in Superstorm Sandy. She returned to school while working at the medical center and is now a licensed massage therapist. For the past 14 years she has owned and operated Body & Soul Massage Therapy in Long Beach.

ISSUES

  • Butts said she believes in building a cohesive community “united in support” for senior care, veterans services, youth transitional life skill programs, small-business growth and maintenance, as well as providing residents with assistance in securing food, health care and financial aid.
  • She said that if elected she will focus on increasing revenue and decreasing overspending to prevent another city budget deficit.
  • Butts said she wants to encourage school workshop-to-workforce programs to help students “transition into life skills and the ability to support themselves and become an integral part of society.”
