Sophie Lambert scored the golden goal with 4:35 remaining in the first overtime period to lead visiting Long Island Lutheran to an 11-10 win over The Stony Brook School in a girls lacrosse PSAA opener on Thursday night.
Lambert finished with six goals, while her twin sister, Bella, saved 14 shots for LuHi. Natalia Pagano scored four goals and Mia Trama added three goals and two assists for The Stony Brook School.
Westhampton 11, Rocky Point 9: Mia Mastropierro scored three goals and had an assist to lead Westhampton (1-1) in Suffolk II. Ava Derby and Mackenzie Klammer scored two goals apiece. Mia Brown made 10 saves.
Oceanside 9, Calhoun 7: Riley Kudlek scored four goals and scooped up six ground balls to lead Oceanside (1-3) in Nassau II. Ella Salonia’s second goal of the game gave the Sailors a 9-4 lead in the fourth quarter. Tessa Gerrard, Angelica Kasimatis and Tess McGuire each scored two goals and had an assist for Calhoun (1-2).
BOYS LACROSSE
Riverhead 9, Patchogue-Medford 3: Tucker Suter scored two goals and won 11 of 13 faceoffs for Riverhead (3-0) in Suffolk I. Nathan Wentwich had two goals and two assists in the victory. Logan Melito had one goal and one assist and Ramon Mateo made 23 saves for Patchogue-Medford (1-1).
Hicksville 6, Great Neck South 5: Kevin Goldthwaite scored three goals and Chris Suflay made 19 saves in 24 chances to lead Hicksville (1-2) in non-league. Jack Ferraro added a goal and two assists. Alex Menzies scored two goals and had an assist and Ritvik Dutta saved seven shots for Great Neck South (1-2).
SOFTBALL
Bethpage 3, East Meadow 1: Rylee Petruskie pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts to lead Bethpage (3-0) in Nassau II. Petruskie, Daniella Palmeri and Isabella Lomangino each had two hits.
Floral Park 13, Valley Stream North 11: Bridget Schmitz went 3-for-3 with a double to lead Floral Park (1-1) in Nassau IV. Madison Sica went 3-for-3 with three doubles and five RBIs and Chloe Zielinski went 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs.
WEDNESDAY’S GAMES
East Islip 5, Smithtown East 4: Cate Ropiak hit the go-ahead RBI double in the top of the fifth inning to score Alyssa Corso and also struck out eight batters over seven innings to lead East Islip in its Suffolk III opener. Ropiak only walked two and allowed three earned runs. Trailing 4-2 in the top of the fifth, Kayla Varga sparked the rally with an RBI single to score Marisa Renganeschi, and Reagan O’Hara followed with a tying RBI double. O’Hara went 2-for-3 with a walk, double and two RBIs, and Lexi Kneisel finished 2-for-4 with a run. Smithtown East is 1-1.
Mineola 5, Clarke 0: Autumn Malone pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to lead Mineola (1-1) in its Nassau II opener. Juli Plunkett went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run, a double and a walk. Ava Lopez and Gianna Leggio both had an RBI.
BASEBALL
Plainedge 8, Wheatley 6: Taylor Nitsch struck out 10 batters over four innings to lead Plainedge (2-0) in Nassau A. Bobby Wescott struck out six batters to earn the save. Jaxson Torres went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Brady Henderson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.
Smithtown West 2, Deer Park 1: Kyle Flood allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings to lead Smithtown West in its Suffolk IV opener. Tyler Austin had three strikeouts in an inning to earn the save for the Bulls. Jesse Lishinsky went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and scored both of their runs. Nick Given and Connor Biglin both went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Wantagh 8, Floral Park 2: Sal Ansaldi went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Wantagh (2-0) in Nassau A. Ryan Tullo added two hits, including a two-run triple. and Tommy Terravecchia and Luka Sumberac combined for the win with 10 strikeouts.
East Islip 6, Bellport 0: Lucas Patton pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to lead East Islip (1-0) in its Suffolk IV opener. Christian Valenti hit a sacrifice fly and laid down a sacrifice bunt to set up a run-scoring hit by Nicholas Azzizzo. Teague Nolan and Chris Rizzo each had two hits for East Islip.
GIRLS BADMINTON
Deer Park 7, North Babylon 2: Maheen Tariq’s win in second singles clinched the first team victory for Deer Park (1-2) in its second season of play. The Falcons’ singles players each swept their matches in the Suffolk I win.
