Lecture: Charles Chaplin - The Mutual Comedies with Phil Harwood
Between 1916 and 1917, Charles Chaplin starred in twelve two-reel comedies for the Mutual Film Corporation. Chaplin would refer to this period as his “happiest years.” These films are considered to be among Chaplin’s best works, demonstrating not only his development as both a physical comedian and a character actor, but also many of the themes and situations that would be featured in his future films. We will view and discuss two Mutual Comedies from 1916: “The Floorwalker,” and “The Pawnshop”. We will also see rare outtakes and footage which demonstrate Chaplin’s filmmaking technique
